Language in News Media
On Saturday, thousands of people gathered up in Washington D.C, and in other parts of the world, for Anti-Trump climate change marches. Shortly after, The New York Times and Fox News released articles about the event. Fox News titled theirs The Latest: Climate protesters in Chicago target Trump Tower, and The New York Times titled theirs Scientists, Feeling Under Siege, March Against Trump Policies. Fox News doesn't mention that the protesters are against Trump's policies, they just say that they are climate protesters and that they protested outside of Trump's tower, but they are not direct as to the reasons why. The New York Times are straight forward and say that people were protesting against Trump's policies. The New York Times went into detail with what some of the signs protesters were carrying said and they also interviewed some of the people. Fox News didn't interview any of the protesters, they didn't publish any of the people's opinions other than those who gave speeches. In one part of the article, Fox News said that a speaker noted that it was Trump's 100th day in the office and that people booed when he said that. Then, they described the mood of the protest as "relaxed". They tried to get rid of the negative feeling we got when they mentioned Trump getting booed by saying that the people were "relaxed". The New York Times said that people felt "increasingly threatened". Fox News also said that people "got together to combat climate change", which is true, but they didn't say that they expressed their dislike of Mr. Trump's policies. The New York Times mentioned that Trump "disparaged climate change as a hoax and cast suspicions on the safety of vaccines". The words disparaged, hoax, suspicions, and safety put together give off a negative vibe. Fox News didn't even mention that Mr. Trump had said this.
Both of these articles talk about protests against President Trump's policies. One of the news source described that protest as "relaxed" and the other actually said that people feel "increasingly threatened". This shows that the way you use language can change the meaning of what something actually is, and how it can influence your perspective and your decisions.
